The Mind Behind the “Modern Urashima”

The Concept: Why “Urashima”?

In Japan, there is a famous folktale called “Urashima Taro.” The protagonist travels to a Dragon Palace deep under the sea. When he returns to land, centuries have passed. He stands on the beach, overwhelmed by a world he no longer recognizes.

I believe many travelers feel like “Urashima Taro” when they visit Japan. You see ancient temples standing next to futuristic robots. You see strict social rules alongside chaotic pop culture. It is fascinating, but often confusing.

I created this blog to be your guide in this “Dragon Palace.”

Who Am I?

My name is Eiri Shimomura (下村 英理). In this blog, I write under the persona of “Taro Urashima.”

I am a student at The University of Tokyo, Japan’s oldest and most prestigious institution. While I spend my days studying academic logic on campus, my true classroom is on the rails and roads of this country.

I have circumnavigated Japan three times, visiting every single prefecture. I analyze the “Why” behind Japanese culture—from the engineering of the Shinkansen to the philosophy of a tea ceremony—and translate it into stories for the intellectual traveler.

Logic and Sound (My Music)

My approach to Japan is built on two pillars: Logic and Art. While this blog explains Japan through words and logic, I also express the atmosphere of this country through sound.

I am a composer/sound artist. The landscapes I see from the train window, the silence of a snowy shrine, the bustle of Tokyo stations—I translate these scenes into music.

If you enjoy my writing, you might also enjoy the “soundtrack” of my journeys.
